Friends & Co’s Commitment to Combating Loneliness and Isolation Among Older Adults in MN

The COVID-19 pandemic shone a harsh light on the loneliness and isolation faced by older adults, especially in Minnesota, as social distancing and lockdowns cut many off from their families and communities. While the pandemic heightened awareness of this issue, loneliness and isolation remain persistent challenges even as the world moves forward. Friends & Co is committed to continuing the fight against this epidemic by fostering community, connection, and meaningful relationships for older adults.

Our services aim to ensure that no older adult feels forgotten or disconnected, regardless of our society’s challenges. This mission is bolstered by the arrival of three passionate new interns—Emma Johnson, Alexis Peterson, and Olivia Funk—who will contribute their talents to our cause.

Emma Johnson – New MSW Intern

Emma Johnson joins us from the University of Minnesota’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program, where she specializes in Health, Disability, and Aging. She brings with her a wealth of experience, having worked with diverse populations at organizations such as SAGE, the New York City Department of Veterans’ Services, and The Fresh Air Fund. A New York City College graduate, Emma is eager to reconnect with her hometown community and continue her professional growth at Friends & Co.

Alexis Peterson – New MSW Intern

Alexis Peterson, a new MSW intern, is also part of the University of Minnesota’s MSW program. With a solid background in psychology from the University of Minnesota-Morris and extensive experience in social services—including roles with the State of Minnesota and Red Lake Nation College—Alexis is well-prepared for her work with Friends & Co. She is particularly enthusiastic about engaging directly with the individuals and communities we serve.

Olivia Funk – New BSW Intern

Olivia Funk, our new Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) intern, is a senior at Augsburg University. Originally from Estherville, Iowa, where she completed her first two years at Iowa Lakes Community College, Olivia is now focused on her studies in social work in the Twin Cities. Passionate about working with older adults, Olivia is eager to start her career with Friends & Co, where she looks forward to building strong relationships within our community.

Addressing Loneliness Beyond the Pandemic
The need for connection among older adults didn’t end when the pandemic did. Friends & Co. remains steadfast in our mission to reduce isolation and build a future where every older adult feels connected and supported. Our new interns, Emma, Alexis, and Olivia, will help strengthen our efforts to meet the needs of those still affected by loneliness, ensuring that they can engage fully with others and remain active in their communities.

We are excited to welcome them to the Friends & Co team as we continue to work together to build a more connected future for Minnesota’s older adults.
