Saying goodbye to our friend, Liz
Elizabeth Ann Smith, affectionately known as Liz, passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 86. Liz was a beloved resident of South Minneapolis Senior Housing, where she lived independently despite her visual impairment, navigating her surroundings with the aid of a walker.
Born with a curious spirit, Liz craved companionship and connection, always welcoming friendly visits and occasional outings. Although she had no immediate family save for two nephews she had met only once, her community within the senior housing complex embraced her warmly. Liz’s circle of friends extended throughout the building, offering her comfort and camaraderie.
A voracious consumer of knowledge, Liz found solace in the world of literature, particularly history and political books on tape. Her passion for understanding the intricacies of the world around her was matched only by her keen interest in current affairs. Liz was a fixture on MyTalk radio, where her insightful discussions on politics and civic life as the featured guest of “Tuesdays With Liz” endeared her to listeners.
In 2020, Liz became a cherished member of Friends & Co, where she found a sense of belonging and shared experiences with others. She became friends with several people during her time with us, including her Visiting Companion, Patricia, who has been a friend and support to Liz for the last four years. Her open-mindedness and acceptance of diverse perspectives made her a beloved figure in her community, always ready to engage in thoughtful dialogue and exchange ideas.
Although Liz’s physical presence may have departed, her spirit lives on in the memories of those who knew and loved her. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, intellect, and kindness that will continue to inspire others for years to come.
