Ardell’s life has been shaped by prairie winds, small-town grit, and the quiet resilience of someone who has outlived nearly everyone who shared the 1930s and ‘40s of her childhood.
Born in Lamberton, Minnesota — “just a speck on the map” near Walnut Grove — she grew up reading Little House on the Prairie while living her own version of it. Her Danish mother, Fannie, and her father, Bill, raised six daughters; Ardell was number five. They began on a farm before moving into town, where she graduated from Lamberton High with a big class and fond memories of gymnastics and good friends.
After school she worked at the chicken plant in Sleepy Eye, and not long after met Robert. They dated six months, married, and built a life of steady togetherness. From living with relatives to a lakeside cabin to an apartment above a shoe store, they eventually built their Blaine home in 1960, where Ardell still lives. Robert passed away ten years ago, his presence still felt in every room. Through Lutheran Social Services, they adopted two infants, Troy and Jolene — her “sweetheart kids.” She and Robert traveled together twice to Hawaii and once on an Alaskan cruise, trips she recalls with warmth and humor.
Today Ardell shares her home with Angel, her chatty parakeet, and a small collection of angel figurines. She once raised Pomeranians and still misses her beloved Penny, who died 18 months ago. Visits that include a four-legged companion would also be welcomed.
Ardell enjoys Monopoly, Scrabble, and card games like Uno. She would love a companion who enjoys friendly games, simple conversation, or a short outing for coffee at the nearby Caribou. She has kind neighbors, but her days are quiet, and she feels especially lonely toward evening.
