When Kelsey and her match were paired in February 2024, they were complete strangers living just 14 miles apart. More than 157 hours later, they’re a big part of each other’s lives.
Over the past two years, they’ve shared countless conversations about family and friends, exciting news, worries, and everything in between. Kelsey’s daughter has joined visits, and her match proudly displays framed artwork from Kelsey’s daughter in her home.
As Kelsey’s match prepares to move closer to her son, one of the things she’s talked about most is how much Kelsey’s visits have meant to her. While their weekly visits are coming to an end, their friendship isn’t. They’ll be staying connected through phone calls and conversation.
We chose Kelsey as our September Volunteer of the Month because of the simple but powerful way she has shown up for her match. Week after week, she turned what could have been just a volunteer commitment into a meaningful friendship.
Their story is a reminder that sometimes the people who make the biggest difference in our lives start out as strangers living just down the road.
What inspires you to volunteer?
I just love doing what I can to make a positive impact in someone else’s life. I get just as much, if not more, out of knowing I made someone’s day better.
What do you enjoy about Friends & Co?
I enjoy the way that Friends & Co offers so many ways to connect to others. I really love being a visiting companion and appreciate that when I’m not with my older adult, she can still connect with others through things like Coffee Talk and Cards Connect.
What is a memorable moment that reflects the connections you’ve made?
One of my favorite moments with my older adult is helping her prepare for her son’s wedding. She was so excited and getting to be around while she prepped for such a special day meant a lot to me.
