Suzanne is navigating an incredibly difficult chapter of her life. Since the recent passing of her husband, who was a huge support, she has been grieving deeply and adjusting to a world that feels unfamiliar and lonely. Blind herself, she often describes theirs as a partnership of “complementary disabilities,” and losing him has meant losing both a companion and the person who served as her eyes.
Before this loss, Suzanne had a vibrant zest for life. She is intelligent, friendly, and full of opinions. She also has a complex personality and, at times, has been demanding of volunteers. This is important to know upfront: She may request help with errands or housework, which are outside the scope of the Visiting Companion role. A volunteer who can navigate these moments with clear boundaries and good humor will be best equipped to befriend her in a sustainable manner without feeling overwhelmed.
Despite challenges, Suzanne genuinely wants to build a meaningful connection with a new volunteer. She values conversation, diverse perspectives, and feeling understood. She is looking for someone who can read to her and help her with her mail. She longs to get outside during the warmer months for walks in the fresh air. She enjoys thrifting, concerts, and is especially passionate about classical music, though she’s open to other genres as well.
Suzanne is hoping for a volunteer who can offer consistency, patience, and straightforward communication, someone who can appreciate her strengths while navigating her demands with clarity and compassion.
