Throughout her many years of service as a Friends & Co volunteer, Katherine Schafer has gone above and beyond in every role she has taken on. From providing companionship to older adults as a Visiting Companion to supporting our Let’s Do Lunch gatherings, she has contributed her time and energy in countless meaningful ways. Schafer’s generosity, persistence, and care have helped create stronger bonds within the community. We are grateful for the positive impact she has on everyone she serves.
What inspires you to volunteer?
I am aware that loneliness is as debilitating as any other physical disease. Many countries have a specific governmental program to address this issue with their elderly population. Our country relies on a volunteer base to meet the needs of isolated elderly people. A person is much healthier physically when they do not feel alone and isolated.
What do you enjoy about Friends & Co?
I am a visiting companion. I determine my schedule to participate in this activity. My small efforts to liven up the life of the person I am paired with are rewarded with her smiles. I also periodically participate in Let’s Do Coffee and Let’s Do Lunch. I enjoy conversing with others at these events.
What is a memorable moment that reflects the connections you’ve made?
I have had many memorable moments so it is hard to pull out only one. I do recall an elder who I started visiting with when she was 99 years old. I would take her to the St. Mary’s Greek festival in September. I let the workers know the age of the elder I was with and then they would announce that to the crowd in attendance. My elder friend would smile when she heard the message.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I love to travel. I think my companion enjoys hearing my stories and seeing pictures of my travels.
