Michael is the Volunteer of the Month because he consistently notices needs and steps in to meet them before anyone even asks. At our Let’s Do Lunch Café gatherings, Michael arrives early to brew coffee, fill water pitchers, set up the room, and ensure that the meal is ready the moment opening announcements conclude. He looks out for participants with dietary restrictions and always checks in to make sure our Director of Community Engagement, Jethra, has what she needs, too.
In addition to his reliability, Michael brings genuine care to every interaction. At Let’s Do Coffee gatherings in Minneapolis, he makes a point to connect with others, validating people’s thoughts and feelings and drawing quieter participants into the conversation. He goes out of his way to make sure people feel seen, valued, and included.
We will miss him greatly when he moves to France in April, and we wanted to take a moment to recognize his efforts and support before he leaves.
What inspires you to volunteer?
I have volunteered for much of my life because I like getting to know people without the strings that might be there as a paid employee.
I have always loved being around older adults from the time I was a child, particularly the wisdom and character that age brings to people.
What do you love about Friends & Co?
Friends and Co inspires me by being accepting of ALL older adults, no matter their life experiences, and providing a safe and brave place for people to be themselves.
I love the company of other older adults, as well as Friends and Co staff. And of course, coffee and lively conversations encourage me to find connections with others in our similarities and differences.

What is a memorable moment that reflects the connections you’ve made?
I was invited to attend Let’s Do Lunch by a dear friend a few years ago and attended initially because of he and his friends were there. With time, I expanded the group of people I spend time with each month.
