Mary Beth Gaines shows the kind of work we hope to do every day. Her caring nature shines through in everything she does: whether she’s spending time chatting with older adults as a weekly Coffee Talker (a volunteer role where Gaines talks with older adults who call in on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon), offering steady one-on-one connection as a Phone Companion (where she’s paired with an older adult and they connect by phone on a schedule that works for both of them), or creating homemade cards through Cards Connect (a program where volunteers make seasonal cards that are sent to older adults across Minnesota) that remind people they’re valued.
Each of these small acts adds up to a big impact in the lives of everyone involved.
What inspires you to volunteer?
I love helping people and I love connecting with others. It just feels so good.
What do you enjoy about Friends & Co?
Friends and Co truly believes in being there for our fellow humans. The outreach programs they provide are sometimes the only connections people have. Its not just a job for Friends and Co – they actually care. For example, if one of the regular coffee talk callers dosen’t call us, someone from the team reaches out to make sure they are ok. THAT is truly caring. I am honored to be part of their work.
What is a memorable moment that reflects the connections you’ve made?
There are so many! Its waiting to get an update on news – a job interview, a doctor appointment, a visit from the county – I feel just as invested as the person going through it.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I love volunteering and I just love and believe the work of Friends and Co.
